Pertussis among patients with clinically compatible illness in the Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia

Abstract Background Pertussis is an acute respiratory tract disease caused by Bordetella pertussis. In 2014, 24.1 million pertussis cases, resulting in 160,700 deaths, were estimated to have occurred worldwide. This study aimed determine the epidemiology of among patients with clinically compatible illness who visited selected hospitals Amhara Regional State Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional design was used review illness. Nasopharyngeal swabs collected from 515 July 2018 through February 2019. DNA extracted all nasopharyngeal and samples analyzed using real-time (RT-) PCR. Crude adjusted odds ratios corresponding 95% confidence intervals bivariable multivariable logistic regression analysis, respectively. Results The overall prevalence species participants 156 (30.3%) [95% CI = 26.4–34.6] as determined RT-PCR, including: 65 (41.7%) B. pertussis, 89 (57.1%) indeterminate one (0.6%) holmesii parapertussis. Conclusions found that potentially endemic a common health problem visiting institutions More data regarding Ethiopia could inform development effective prevention strategies.
